AMBURGEY, Tracy Steven, 35, of Salem, died Wednesday, May 31, 1995. He was preceded in death by his father, Sgt. Alfred J. Amburgey, and maternal grandparents, Charlie and Hazel Ryan of Blackwood, Va., and paternal grandparents, Dib and Arizona Amburgery, Thackersbranch, Va. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Irene and Lloyd Maxwell, Salem; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Stacy Dale, of Christiansburg, and Phillip Wayne and Connie of Ironto; a sister, Beverly Maxwell of Roanoke; a daughter, Chasity; four neices and one nephew. Funeral service 11 a.m. Friday, June 2, 1995 at the Grant E. Bryant Funeral Home, Elliston. Mr. Amburgey's remains will be taken to the Hagy Funeral Home in Norton. Interment will be in Powell-Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap, Va. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Grant E. Bryant Funeral Home, Elliston. AMOS, Lucille Umberger, 84, of Pulaski, died Wednesday morning, May 31, 1995, in the St. Lukes Hospital, Bluefield , W.Va. She was born in Pulaski on January 19, 1911 and was the daughter of the late Joseph Fisher Umberger and Dora Belle Umberger Umberger. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Pulaski. She was a retired bank teller having 39 years of service for Virginia National Bank, which is today NationsBank. She was preceded in death by her husband, O'Neal Amos and two sisters, Billie U. Haislip and Mary Maxine Umberger. Surviving are daughter, Sandra N. Amos, Banner Elk, N.C. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from the Trinity Lutheran Church, Pulaski with the Rev. John McCandlish and the Rev. Steven Ridenhour officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. There will be no visitation. BRYANT, James R., 83, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 1995. EARLY, Roscoe James, 82, of Elliston, died Monday, May 29, 1995, in Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Woods Early and was currently a resident of Heritage Hall Nursing Home. He is survived by four daughters, Helen Poff, Geraldine Ratcliff, both of Ironto, Reba Dudley, Eunice Dudley both of Christiansburg; three sons, Stanley Early, Christiansburg, Johnny Early, Salem, and Robert Early, Thaxton; one brother, Houston Early, Blacksburg; one sister, Minnie Murray, Richmond; 20 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. FISHER, Roy Lee, 78, of Christiansburg, died Monday, May 29, 1995, in Montgomery Regional Hospital. FUQUA, Miss Thelma, 72, of Bedford, passed Tuesday, May 30, 1995, at Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She is survived by three brothers, one sister, a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Chapel services will be held at the Bedford Funeral Home Chapel Friday, June 2, 1995, at 1:30 p.m. There will be no viewing. Burial will follow at the Fairmont Cemetery. HAIGH, Benjamin William, 87, of Raleigh, N.C., died Tuesday, May 30, 1995. Surviving are his daughter, Lois Haigh Gibbon and her husband, Edward L. Gibbon of Radford; two granddaughter, Meg Gibbon of Vienna, and Kara L. Gibbon of Richmond. Mr. Haigh was predeceased by his son, Carl W. Haigh, in 1973. HARRIS, Harvey H., 73, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, May 28, 1995. He was a member of Mt. Sinia Holiness Church and retired from Roanoke Gas Company. HINTON, Calvin C., (``Doc""), 72, of Salem, formerly of Raleigh, N.C., passed away Tuesday, May 30, 1995. He was a World War II Army Veteran with the 10th Mountain Division. He was also a Mason and a Shriner. He was preceded in death by a sister, Maude H. Hare. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John C. and Wanda Hinton; a grandson, Christopher C. Hinton; a daughter and son-in-law, Suzette and Dick Colten; a brother and sister-in-law, O. Felton and Esther V. Hinton; sister Kate H. Batten; several nieces and one nephew. MARKHAM, W. Allen Jr., 84, of Okeechobee, Fla., and a summer resident of Bedford, died Tuesday, May 30, 1995 in Raulerson Hospital, Okeechobee. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, January 29, 1911, son of the late Walter Allen Markham Sr. and Bessie Lowry Markham. Active in community and civic affairs, he was a past President of the Okeechobee County Chamber of Commerce, a Rotarian with 25 years perfect attendance, Lions Club member and was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rite. He served in the Florida State House of Representatives for 11 years where he was appointed Vice Chairman of the Appropiations committee and the Agriculture committee and Chairman of the Banks and Loans committee. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America for many years and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award in 1959 and the Silver Antelope Award in 1967. He was an organizer and original Director of the Okeechobee County Bank until its merger with The Barnett Bank. Mr. Markham and his late brother, Roscoe began Markham Brothers and Company, a fruit and vegetable canning operation in 1938 with its headquarters in Okeechobee. They operated plants in Florida, Virginia, Georgia and Pennsylvania until the 1970's. He was an organizer and Director of the Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association, a Director of the National Canners Association and past President and Director of the Florida Vegetable Canners Association. He is survived by his wife, Dolly Markham; three sons, Tommy Markham, Okeechobee; Charles Markham, Fort Myers, Fla. and Bedford, Edward Bowns, Atlanta, Ga.; three daughters, Martha Ann Pitts and Mary J. Rucks, both of Okeechobee, Margaret C. Bilbrey, Durham, N.C.; a sister, Elizabeth Fowler Green, Lowry; also 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at the graveside at Timber Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery, Bedford, Saturday, June 3, 1995 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Clayton C. Riggs officiating. Memorials may be

McCUE, Lillian Louise Abner, 65, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, May 31, 1995, at her home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ezra and Mallie Abner, one sister, Brenda Crotty, a daughter, Mallie Joanne Abner, and one grandchild, Angel Harrah. She is survived by her devoted husband of 38 years, Walter Allen McCue; two sons, Jimmy Roger Harrah, Moneta and Johnny Wayne Harrah, Salem; five brothers, Elisha E. F., Harold D. Abner, both of Ohio, Charles Abner, W.Va., Rev. James C. Abner, Chatham, Wilfred Lee Abner, Fla.; two sisters, Mildred Cooper, Moneta, and Rozella Morrison, Roanoke. PADIS, Leo Archie, 70, of Blacksburg, died Tuesday, May 30, 1995, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Mr. Padis was born in Norfolk on June 13, 1924 the son of the late Archie Padis and Cleo Evangelo Padis. He received a B.S. with honors in mechanical engineering in 1948 and a M.S. in mechanical engineering in 1949 at Virginia Tech. Mr. Padis taught in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Virginia Tech from 1949-1970. Beginning in 1970 he served as an Administrator in the College of Engineering, retiring in 1988 as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. He was a member and served as faculty advisor for Tau Beta Pi, a national honorary engineering society, member of Pi Tau Sigma, a national honorary mechanical engineering fraternity, member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership society, member and served as president of Phi Kappa Phi. Also a member of the Commission on Undergraduate Studies and the University Academic Appeals Committee. Served on the University Commencement Committee, the Commission on Student Affairs, the Board of Governors of the Student Union, and as chairman of the Honor System Review Board. Mr. Padis was the author of four publications and three papers in the area of Engineering kinematics. He received the Wine Award for Excellence in Teaching. He also served as chairman of the engineering faculty organization. He was a member and Past President of the Christiansburg-Blacksburg Rotary Club, and a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthadox Church, where he served on the Parish Council. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Julia P. Orphan and a brother, George A. Padis, Surviving are his wife, Catherine C. Padis; two sons and daughter-in-law, Leo Archie Padis Jr., Richmond, and Archie Stephen and Leslee Ann Padis; and a granddaughter, Catherine Olivia Padis, all of Roanoke; one brother and sister-in-law, Alexander Archie and Athena Padis, Belmont, Mass.; his mother -in-law, Mary Cacaroukas; and a sister-in-law and husband, Amalia and James Tselides, all of Massapequa, N.Y.; several close nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, June 2, 1995, at 11 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 30 Huntington Ave., Roanoke, Va. with the Rev. Nicholas G. Bacalis officiating. PHILPOTT, Betty Caroline Taylor, of Bassett, died Wednesday, May 31, 1995. Mrs. Philpott was born April 29, 1923, in Laurens, S.C. to the late John Arthur and Madge Medlock Taylor. She was a graduate of Laurens High School, was a member of Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church and the Philathea Sunday School Class. Mrs. Philpott was a long-time member of the American Legion Auxiliary, having served for many years as Secretary-Treasurer of the Bassett Chapter. She was a former member of the Bassett Garden Club and a volunteer for the Food and Fun Program at Bassett United Methodist Church. She retired as secretary at Pocahontas Bassett Church, and had been previously employed by Bassett Furniture Industries. Surviving are her husband, George C. Philpott Sr.; daughter and son-in-law, Judith P. and H. Neil Stultz, Pittsburgh, Pa.; sons and daughter-in-law, George C. Philpott Jr., Greensboro, N.C., Franklin T. and Rhonda L. Philpott, Russellville, Ariz., and Mark R. Philpott, Bassett; sisters and brother-in-law, Helen Kay and Ralph DeMario, and Jean T. Williams, all of Laurens, S.C.; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Fred (Edythe) Taylor, Woodruff, S.C., Mrs. Wesley (Dorothy) Taylor, Laurens, S.C., and Mrs. Henry (Helen) Meade Roanoke; grandchildren, David B. SCHRADER, Harless Raymond, (""Pete""), 74, of Route 1, Box 45, Pulaski, died Wednesday morning, May 31,1995 in the Pulaski Community Hospital. He was born in Pulaski on January 25, 1921, and was the son of the late C. Frank Schrader and Esther Mae Huff Schrader. He was a veteran having served in the United States Army during WW II and was a member of the Bob White Boulevard Baptist Church, Pulaski. He was preceded in death by a brother, Pat Schrader. He was a member of the American Legion Post #7, Pulaski, a member of the Pulaski VFW Post #1184. Surviving are his wife, Lucille K. VARNEY, Jeryl C., 66, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, May 31, 1995 in a local hospital. He was a member of Cave Spring Baptist Church and co-founder of Varney Electric Company. He

was also a member of the Blue Hills Golf Club. Surviving are his wife, Betty A. WEEKS, Druss Eddie, 82, of Rt. 6 Bassett, died Tuesday, May 30, 1995 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville & Henry County. He was the husband of the late Opal Gaye Weeks, who died May 9, 1995. Born in Floyd County April 24, 1913 to the late Fort Monroe Weeks and the late Matilda Lester Weeks. He was retired from Bassett Furniture Company with over 40 years of service. He was a member of the Bassett Church of Brethren. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Judy W. Scott. Surviving are three daughters, Brenda W. Flythe, Martinsville, Shelby W. Hall and Joyce W. Shortt, Floyd; one son, Tony Edward Weeks, Bassett; two sisters, Mrs. Letha Reed and Troye Gillistie, both of Floyd; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was a retired Weaver with Burlington Industries for Glasgow, member of Buchanan Assembly of God Church and was preceded in death by a son, David Williams, and a grandson, Jamie Williams.
