WHO, WHEN & WHERE

Art exhibit

Artist and Hollins College alumna Eleanor Wilson will host the exhibit opening of her paintings today from 3-5 p.m., at the Art Gallery of Hollins College.

Wilson combines musical rhythms and images from the science world of quantum physics in capturing patterns onto her canvases. ```God geometrizes,' Plato told us,'' she said. ``These shapes of nature are everywhere.''

Wilson received her bachelor of arts in chemistry from Hollins in 1930 and studied painting in New York at the Museum or Modern Art and the New School. She has hosted numerous exhibits.

The exhibit will continue through June 23. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-9p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 1-4 p.m.

Artemis opens

The Artemis XVIII Art Show will open Sunday at the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center.

Artemis, the organization and the journal based in Roanoke, began in 1977 as a celebration of women in the arts. Men were welcomed in 1981 as contributing writers, artists and board members.

The purpose of Artemis is to encourage and document the development of art and writing in the Blue Ridge region and Virginia. The group publishes an annual art and literary journal and presents an annual jurored traveling art exhibit.

The opening reception will be held Sunday from 1-4 p.m. The exhibit will close on July 16.

City Art Show choice

``A Game of Dodge the Truck'' by Jamie Nervo Cohan of New Castle was voted the People's Choice in the 1995 City Art Show.

The painting also received an Award of Excellence from this year's juror, Jack Cowart of the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C.

The City Art Show is presented by The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge to recognize and honor area artists and is held in cooperation with the city of Roanoke and the Art Museum of Western Virginia. The show is open to artists 18 or older who are from the Blue Ridge region.
