GLENVAR FALLS IN BASEBALL

Patrick Henry-Glade Spring took advantage of four errors to score six runs in the first two innings and cruised to an 11-2 victory over Glenvar in a Region C baseball tournament semifinal at Calfee Park in Pulaski on Thursday.

Bill Wilson had three hits to lead the offense for the Rebels (18-6), who will face Lebanon today at 7 p.m. at Calfee Park. Glenvar (12-8-2) was held to four hits and finished with six errors.

Matt McNulty tossed a three-hitter as Lebanon defeated Floyd County 3-0 in the other semifinal. McNulty struck out nine.

Brad Sheppard drove in the only run Lebanon (18-3) needed in the third inning.

Sammy Burton gave up four hits, struck out seven and walked two for Floyd County (17-5).

In other baseball:

REGION III: Richard Apperson went 3-for-3 with a single, a double and a two-run homer as Amherst County defeated William Byrd 4-2 in a semifinal at William Byrd to advance to the title game.

Jackie Wright went 2-for-4 with a single and a double, and Scott Christian was 2-for-4 with two singles for Amherst (18-4), which will face Brookville in the championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday in Lynchburg.

The Terriers twice loaded the bases, but couldn't get a hit when they needed it. Brian Jones went 2-for-3 with a single and a double, and C.D. Polumbo went 1-for-2 with a home run for William Byrd (15-5-1).

Patrick Muncher went 2-for-3 with two doubles as Brookville beat Fieldale-Collinsville 4-0 in the other semifinal. Muncher also threw a one-hitter and struck out nine. Brandon Inge went 2-for-4 with two singles for the Bees (21-2).

Fieldale-Collinsville finished 19-3.

Tennis

GROUP A GIRLS: At Hampden-Sydney, Parry McCluer's Melanie Wetzel lost to Natasha Belcher of J.J. Kelly 6-0, 6-2 in the singles final. Wetzel had advanced to the state championship match by beating West Point's Jenna Caprio 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 on Wednesday, and Belcher defeated Kristen Hull of Buffalo Gap 6-0, 6-0 in the other semifinal.

Grayson County, looking to win the team title, was beaten by George Mason 7-2 on Wednesday in a semifinal. J.J. Kelly beat West Point 7-2 in the other semifinal and claimed the state championship with a 7-2 victory over George Mason on Thursday.

Grayson County's Megan and Jenny Reedy lost a bid the doubles crown when they were beaten by New Kent's Susan Leuke and Lisa Hogge 6-4, 6-7 (7-5), 6-2 in a semifinal Wednesday. They lost Thursday to Erin Abots and Riara Wilson of George Mason 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in the consolation match.

GROUP AA GIRLS: In Poquoson, Salem's Jill Archer and Betsy Hall came up short in their bid for state titles.

Archer dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Meghan Mahan of Western Albemarle in the singles championship match. Archer and Hall fell 6-3, 6-2 to Kay Hill and Amy Wells of Fort Defiance in the doubles final.

Softball

REGION C: In Salem, the Region C softball tournament was rained out and pushed back until today. The tournament will be held at Green Hill Park in Salem, a change from the Moyer Complex where it had been scheduled.

Semifinals are 4:30 p.m., with Glenvar taking on Castlewood and Floyd County facing James River. The winners qualify for next week's Group A tournament and will meet at 7 p.m. for the Region C championship.
