RAIN DAMPENS FLIPPEN'S DAY

University of Virginia golfer Jimmy Flippen did not finish second-round play Thursday at the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships because of rain.

Flippen, who shot a 79 in first-round play Wednesday, is scheduled to complete his round today.

Stanford, which shot a 292 on Thursday, leads the team competition at 581. Oklahoma State is two strokes back, and Arizona is tied with Houston and North Carolina State at 584.

In other sports in the region:

Roanoke's Mike Reed, competing for Liberty University, failed to make it past the preliminary round in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Knoxville, Tenn. Reed, a senior from WIlliam Fleming High School, ran a time of 51.95 seconds.

The Hanes Division of Sara Lee Corp., sponsor of the Hanes 500 NASCAR Winston Cup race at Martinsville Speedway for the past six years, has extended its sponsorship of the event through 1997 with options for additional years.

The company also sponsors the speedway's Saturday event, the Hanes 150.

The open practice session scheduled Thursday at New River Valley Speedway was rained out and has been rescheduled for 4-8 p.m. today at the Radford track.

There is no admission charge for the grandstand area. The infield charge is $10 with a NASCAR license.

Jimmy Mullins and Bobby Radford will go head-to-head Saturday night at Franklin County Speedway. Radford had accused Mullins of knocking him out of a potential victory in the past two races at the Callaway track. Steve Lynch also will participate in the feature race at 8 p.m.
