ROCKY MOUNT MAN CRITICAL AFTER CRASH

A Rocky Mount man was in critical condition Saturday after a head-on collision on Virginia 643 Friday evening.

David Legans was heading south on Virginia 643 in a pickup when he collided head-on with a van driven by Gary Rutrough, also of Rocky Mount.

Trooper D.M. Tibbs said Legans was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital after rescue workers freed him from his truck.

Tibbs said he believes Rutrough was treated for an arm injury and released from Franklin Memorial Hospital.

Rainy weather may have contributed to the accident, but Tibbs also is investigating an unconfirmed report of a third vehicle's being involved. The third vehicle may have caused one of the first two to swerve into oncoming traffic.
