FORMER NFL COACH FIELDS 2 TOP CARS

Cory McClenathan, John Force, Warren Johnson and David Schultz won professional titles Sunday at the NHRA Virginia is for Lovers Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park.

McClenathan won in Top Fuel, Force in Funny Car, Johnson in Pro Stock and Schultz in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the eighth event of the 1995 NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series.

McClenathan, from Anaheim, Calif., earned his third victory of the season and took the lead in the NHRA Winston Top Fuel standings with a victory over Blaine Johnson.

McClenathan covered the quarter-mile in 4.962 seconds (293.82 mph) in a car owned by former NFL coach Joe Gibbs. Blaine Johnson finished in 4.980 (282.39).

Force, from Yorba Linda, Calif., won his fourth race of the season by defeating K.C. Spurlock. Force, the points leader, finished in 5.193 (270.59) in a Pontiac Firebird. Spurlock finished in 5.570 (246.23) in a Dodge Avenger.

Johnson, from Duluth, Ga., earned his first victory since September 1994 by beating Jim Yates. Johnson finished in 7.062 (196.03) in an Oldsmobile Cutlass.

Yates, who took the points lead, finished in 7.109 (195.18) in a Pontiac Firebird owned by Gibbs.

Schultz, from Fort Myers, Fla., earned his third consecutive victory and padded his points lead by beating first-time finalist Steve Johnson. Schultz finished in 7.596 (180.32) on a Suzuki. Johnson finished in 7.616 (180.68) on a Suzuki GSXR.
