Imagine a lawyer without a court, a mechanic without a wrench or a teacher without a classroom. Now imagine a newspaper without working telephones.

That's what happened to the New River bureau of the Roanoke Times & World-News on Monday because of an equipment failure. We had no phone service, no way for you to speak with reporters, advertising representatives or circulation officials. And no way for us to call you.

The breakdown was to have been repaired by late Monday afternoon. So dial away today. Our main bureau telephone number is 382-4905.

We're sorry if the outage caused any confusion or inconvenience. But on the bright side, things sure were quiet around the office Monday.
