1,100 RAVE, 4 ARRESTED AT `EVOLUTION'

``Evolution," the largest rave yet in the Roanoke Valley, drew 1,100 dancers to the Roanoke Civic Center's Exhibition Hall late Saturday and early Sunday.

As ravers danced to the hard-throbbing beat of techno music spun by 10 disc jockeys from around the country, five uniformed police officers patrolled indoors and six Roanoke sheriff's deputies patrolled the parking lot. The security, paid for by the promoter, was required by the city, which was particularly concerned about possible drug use in the parking lot.

To discourage traffic outside the rave, those who left the party and wanted to re-enter had to pay another $12 admission.

"Based on the information I have, it was a relatively uneventful night," Police Chief M. David Hooper said.

Four people were arrested on drug charges, all in the parking lot, he said.

Two Navy seamen - Roy Guilda Ball III of Utica, Ohio, and Eric Richard Davenport of Sedalia, Mo. - were arrested by a deputy patrolling the parking lot, Hooper said. Ball, 20, was charged with possession of LSD. Davenport, 21, was charged with possession of LSD with intent to distribute.

Ball and Davenport, who are stationed on ships on the Virginia coast, were released on bond.

Two 17-year-old Roanoke boys were arrested in the parking lot and charged with possession of marijuana. Police did not release their names.
