200 STUDENTS TESTED AFTER TB DIAGNOSED

Health officials tested about 200 high school students Monday who had recent close contact with a student infected with tuberculosis.

Nurses from the city Health Department visited T.C. Williams High School and screened students and about 10 teachers and staff. Anyone who tests positive for exposure to TB will be X-rayed, then probably will be treated with antibiotics, said Jane Moore, a city public health nurse.

The infected student, identified only as a participant in the school's English as a second language program, is being treated for the contagious respiratory disease.

The school sent notes home with students Friday, informing parents of the infection and testing plans.

``There has been a concern, but I would not say an overreaction,'' Principal John Porter said.

So far health officials have found no evidence that the disease spread. Results of the latest tests should be available Wednesday.
