ROANOKE AREA YOUTH PROGRAMS

Stars Come Out At Night. An evening program offered by Roanoke Parks and Recreation for youth 12-18 . Held in five city parks weekdays throughout the summer. Activities include various sports and guest speakers. 981-2236.

Adventures in the Park. A morning program offered by Roanoke Parks and Recreation for youth 6-12 . Held in eight city parks weekdays throughout the summer. Activities include athletics, swimming and arts and crafts. 981-2236.

Teens Special Events Program. Roanoke Parks and Recreation offers six Friday-night events for youth 14-18 at Washington Park and Fallon Park pools. Activities include swimming, music and give-aways. Held from 9 p.m.-midnight. 981-2236.

West End Center. An after-school program that offers recreation, educational assistance, mentoring and nutrition. Available to youth residing in the West End neighborhood. 342-0902.

Straight Street. Organizes weekend event during the school year for youth aged 12-19. During the summer, offers weekday and weekend activities. 342-2078.

YMCA Drop-In Program. An after-school program primarily for K-5 youth who live in Roanoke public housing. Provides recreation, nutrition, tutoring and transportation to and from the center. 344-9622.

The Brambleton Center. Offers a variety of activities for students in grades 6-12. Amenities include a game room, lounge, clubs, classes, field trips, tutors and computer facilities. Yearly membership is $12. 772-7525.

Volunteer Action Center. Provides summer volunteer opportunities to youth 10 and up. Placed about 1,000 youth last summer. 985-0131.

YWCA Youth Club. An enrichment program for girls 10-14. Offers recreation, arts and crafts, information workshops and self-esteem and values activities. Meets once a week during the school year, twice a week in the summer. 345-9922.

Salvation Army Southeast. Provides year-round recreation and other programs to youth aged 6 and up. Has athletic teams, weight and game room, movie night, tutoring and various other activities. 345-4483.

Apple Ridge Farm. This Floyd County retreat offers a summer academic day camp to selected youth ages 6-15. Includes athletics, nature hikes, field trips, games and small group workshops that focus on subjects such as writing, art and video-making. Transportation and nutrition provided. 982-1322.

Jobs Training Camp. A summer program offered through Roanoke's Office on Youth. Two three-week sessions teach youth 12-15 how to successfully apply and retain jobs. Each session has room for 150 youngsters. 981-2349.

Summer Internship Program. Offered through the Office on Youth, this program places high school and college students in paid internships throughout the city. Accepts high school students in grades 11 and 12 and college students from all academic levels. 981-2349.
