The Senior Athletes of Montgomery County were among those participating in the VIRGINIA GOLDEN OLYMPICS that wrapped up over the weekend at The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg.

Nearly two dozen SAMs members received gold, silver or bronze medals in the events in their individual age groups. This year's medalists included:

ELLA LONG, one of the first women in Pulaski County to own a business and supervise both male and female employees, celebrated her 100th birthday in May. She now lives at the Randolph House of Pulaski Home for Adults, where friends and family attended a reception in her honor on her birthday, May 22.

Among her cards was one from President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

With her sisters, Long owned and was dry cleaning manager for the Pulaski Laundry for about three decades, from the 1940s until her retirement in the early 1970s.

In 1945, she and 14 others formed the Pulaski Business and Professional Woman's Club for working women. The organization celebrated its 50th anniversary this year. Even after she could no longer attend regular meetings, she worked as telephone chairman for the club.

She is the only survivor among the group of founders, and was honored earlier this year by the club as the Woman of the Year.
