OWENS A HIT IN HIS DEBUT WITH REDS

Eric Owens, a former Ferrum College standout, hit a 10th-inning single in his first official major-league at-bat to give the Cincinnati Reds a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

Thomas Howard led off the bottom of the 10th with a fly ball to center that dropped in front of late-breaking Al Martin for a double. Owens slapped a single to right off Dan Miceli (0-2), giving the Reds their 13th victory in 15 games.

Owens was called up from the Cincinnati Reds' top farm club Monday night when the team sent down pitcher Johnny Ruffin.

Owens, an infielder from Danville, batted .314 in 47 games with Indianapolis of the Class AAA American Association. He hit seven homers, drove in 33 runs and stole 13 bases for Indianapolis while ranking first or second on the team in 10 offensive categories.

Notes

MAYHEW ASSIGNED: Ferrum right-hander Keith Mayhew, a 31st-round pick who was signed by the Atlanta Braves, has been assigned to their short-season Class A affiliate, the Eugene (Oregon) Emeralds of the Northwest League. There had been talk of Mayhew playing in the Appalachian League in Danville, but the team decided he was more advanced. Mayhew must report by Saturday.

FILCHNER SIGNS CONTRACT: Duane Filchner, Radford University's career leader in virtually every offensive category, has signed a contract with the Oakland Athletics. Filchner will go to the instructional league in Arizona before being assigned to Medford, Ore., of the Northwest League.
