Five full-time teachers will be employed to instruct the 91 juniors and seniors coming next year from high schools in Pulaski, Giles, Wythe, Carroll, Bland, Floyd and Smyth counties and the city of Galax.
Major expenses in the budget will be $256,550 for school year salaries, $63,275 for contractual services, $14,500 for improvement of the facilities on the Pulaski County High School campus, $62,753 for material and equipment, $3,500 for staff development, $17,463 for student activities, $2,250 for the general fund and $31,500 for summer salaries during special programs offered by the school.
The total is less than the $482,295 spent during the current school year.
In other business, the school's governing board learned that Giles student Setul Patel won several awards at last month's International Science and Engineering Fair including a first in the engineering category.
The school also placed fourth in Virginia Mathematics League competition, in a tie with West Springfield High School with cumulative scores of 145 each. The top score, earned by Lafayette High School, was 149. The Governor's School was first in its region.
