Singers sought

BLACKSBURG - The Celebration Chorus needs singers for the town's Fourth of July festivities. Rehearsals begin June 15, 7 p.m., at the Blacksburg Community Center, 725 Patrick Henry Drive.

The chorus, in its sixth year, is open to singers of any age. The Blacksburg Community Band accompanies the chorus.

This year, Kevin Fenton of Virginia Tech will direct the chorus. Seth Williamson, classical music show host for public radio station WVTF (89.1 FM) and arts critic for the Roanoke Times & World-News will narrate the holiday program.

Writing workshop

BLACKSBURG - Virginia writers Ann Goethe and Michael Chitwood will lead the fifth annual writer's workshop at the Reynolds Homestead, Aug. 12. Up to 20 participants will be chosen to participate in a day of readings, discussion and critiques. Deadline for poetry and fiction is June 30.

Goethe is author of 1993's "Midnight Lemonade," a Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club alternate, which has been translated into four languages. Chitwood has been a visiting writer at the University of Virginia and Duke.

Cost of $45 includes lunch. Applicants should submit five poems or five to 15 pages of fiction with a self-addressed stamped envelope to the Reynolds Homestead, Route 1, Box 190, Critz, Va., 24082. Call 694-7181.
