BYRD CONTINUES SOFTBALL QUEST

Unbeaten William Byrd takes to the road today in its effort to win a Group AA state softball title.

The Terriers travel to Richlands at 5 p.m. for a Group AA state semifinal contest. Byrd is 23-0 and faces a Richlands team that eliminated two-time defending Group AA Rustburg 1-0 in a first-round contest on Tuesday.

The Terriers beat Virginia High 6-3 in an opening round contest after beating Rustburg 2-1 in the Region III championship game last week. If the Terriers win, they will play host to the state title game next week.

In other news in the region:

Saturday races that are rained out at New River Valley Speedway now will be run the following afternoon, speedway promoter Ronnie Snoddy said. The only exception to this new policy will be when WKA kart races are scheduled June 18, July 23, Aug.6 and Aug.20.

Rainouts in three of the past four weeks have put the Late Model drivers behind in the Mid-Atlantic Region points chase. Those missed events will be made up in twin Late Model race dates to be announced soon. The Enduro race rained out last Saturday also has to be rescheduled.

The practice session rained out last Thursday will take place today from 4 p.m. until dark. The grandstand is open and is free to the public, There is a $10 infield admission, and a NASCAR license is required.

New River Valley Speedway's NASCAR officials said the top three cars in the Mini Stock race, were legal and Saturday night's finish order would stand.

Kevin Kenley of Christiansburg was the winner, with Floyd's Ray Sowers second. Third place went to Kevin Light of Riner. Roanoke's Robert Cox and Randy Bell of Galax completed the top five.
