DMV TO OVERSEE MOTOR CARRIERS

Beginning July 1, the oversight of motor carriers in Virginia will be transferred from the State Corporation Commission to the Division of Motor Vehicles.

The change, result of a law passed by the 1995 General Assembly, is designed to make it possible for motor carriers to obtain all of their state credentials from one agency.

DMV will regulate household movers, passenger carriers, charter services, limousines and executive sedans, broker licenses, motor launch carriers, and sightseeing and charter party carriers by boat. It also will administer the Single State Registration System for proof of insurance required by the federal government.

The Virginia State Police will conduct motor carrier safety inspections formerly conducted by the SCC.

Beginning Jan. 1, the DMV will be responsible for collecting road-use taxes from Virginia carriers on behalf of the states participating in the International Fuel Tax Agreement and for follow-up audits.
