SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL SCHEDULE

The Summer Arts Festival is underway. Sponsored by Virginia Tech and Blacksburg, the festival offers plays, movies, music and art exhibits admission-free until mid-June. Here are some upcoming events.

THEATER

"Grace and Disgrace," a sketch of southern fiction, will be showing in Squires Studio Theater June 13-17 and July 6-8 at 8 p.m. The play will highlight the literary works of such authors as Mark Twain, Tennessee Williams, Richard Wright, Walker Percy, Flannery O'Connor, and Carson McCuller. The performers are members of Theatre Arts-University Theatre faculty and seniors along with local actors. The ensemble is led by faculty member David Johnson.

"Blithe Spirit" is a farce by British playwright Noel Coward. The comedy centers on an unlucky fellow who accidentally conjures up his wife's ghost. Directed by faculty members Greg Justice and Jack Dudley, the play runs June 29-July 1 and July 11-15.

OUTDOOR CONCERTS

All outdoor concerts begin at 6 p.m. Fridays on Henderson Lawn of the Virginia Tech campus, on College Avenue across from the Lyric Theater.

June 9 Folk and bluegrass originals by No Strings Attached.

June 16 Catherine Breske & Friends bring old favorites, Broadway and pop music

June 23 The Riverboat Ramblers bring their Dixieland jazz.

ART EXHIBITS

Now-August 20 "Methanogenesis: Eco-Art by Merle Laderman Ukeles and the Mountain Lake Workshop" will be on display at The Art Museum of Western Virginia at Center in The Square in downtown Roanoke.

May 23-June 10 "Painting Nature." Armory Art Gallery exhibit features work by Virginia Tech art department alumni Greg Bryson, Jeff Wilson and Joe Kelley.

June 13-July 7 "Multiples." Armory Art Gallery Exhibit features drawing from nature and tradition by Jeff Fleming.
