FBI PROBING BANKER'S TRANSACTIONS

The FBI is investigating transactions made by a former Pearisburg banker after the National Bank of Blacksburg turned over information to investigators.

Bank officials said the transactions in question are few in number and do not involve large amounts of money.

"It's in the hands of the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office," said Marilyn Buhyoff, senior vice president of National Bank of Blacksburg. She said she hopes the investigation will be over soon, but she doesn't know how long it will take.

The bank discovered problems and reported them to authorities, bank officials said. The bank itself is not under investigation, they said.

Federal and Giles County authorities are tight-lipped about the focus of the investigation. No charges have been filed.

"An investigation is going on, and at this point, I really can't say anything," Pearisburg Town Manager Ken Vittum said.

"Our police are cooperating, but they are not the investigative agency. So our Police Department may not know until late in the game if anybody's going to be charged with anything," Vittum said.
