NEW RIVER PEOPLE

For the third time in five years, Bob Abraham of Christiansburg was recognized for his underwater photography.

Abraham won first place in macro photography in Diving Enterprise's annual photography contest. More than 40,000 photographs were entered in this year's competition.

Abraham's photographs of dolphins was published in the 1993 edition of the Virginia Tech Electrical Engineering Magazine. Locally, his work is on display at New River Scuba Center and Photo Expo. It also will be displayed at Artists Choice Framing Gallery in Blacksburg.

The Twin County Ruritan Club, a civic service organization that serves the U.S. 11-460 corridor from Salem to Shawsville, recently elected new officers. They are: president, Talmadge Mathis of Inland Motor; vice president, Lynn Ricker, retired, General Electric; secretary, Frances Helmandollar, retired, Roanoke Valley Psychiatric Center; and treasurer, Trudy Graham of Premier Bank.

Other appointed officers include: reporter, Carole Brackman of Multimedia Creations and chaplain, Curt Helmandollar, retired, General Electric. Directors are Edith Parker, Janie Mathis and Vera Peterson.

Ricker also was selected as the Ruritan member of the year.

The Blacksburg Newcomers installed new officers at the annual fashion show May 9: Sarah Brubaker, president; Barbara Weimerskirch, co-president; Mary Grace Theodore, co-vice president; Mildred Johnson, treasurer; Jean Kreamalmeyer, recording secretary; Kandy Davis, corresponding secretary, Elfriede Hartmann, historian and Mary Wolverton, outgoing president and new parliamentarian.

The groups meets monthly, September through May.

Several New River Valley water-media artists will display their paintings at the 16th Virginia Watercolor Society Jurored Exhibition, 1995. Artists include Carole C. Davis, Martha Dillard, Robert Fields, Victoria Stone, of Blacksburg; Z.L. Feng, Yumiko Ichikawa, Mei Shu, all of Radford; and Mary Whitehurst of Draper. The exhibition will include 119 water-media paintings.

The exhibition will be at the Longwood Center for Visual Arts in Farmville, June 12-15. Awards are to be presented today,

The Southside Garden Club won a merit award for its yearbook at the state convention in Richmond. The club also won first place for its tree project. Two members were installed as officers, Mrs. Jerald Robinson was installed as treasurer of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs and Mrs. Daniel Ludwig was installed as director/treasurer of the Blue Ridge District. Both will serve two-year terms.

Mrs. E.V. Russell Jr. and Mrs. Roger Simpson won blue ribbons for artistic designs. Mrs. Caceci, Mrs. Lyn Glover, Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Simpson won blue ribbons for horticulture.

Calvin J. Hawkins of the Radford-Montgomery Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 776, was elected junior vice commander of the Sixth District. An active member of Post 776, he most recently served as post advocate. He will serve a one-year term in his new position.

The Woman's Club of Radford won several awards at the statewide meeting of Virginia Federation of Women's Clubs. Bonnie Hayes received a blue ribbon in the arts and crafts contest and Elizabeth Faulkner received three red ribbons for her needlework. The club also received a certificate of achievement for its youth/literacy project. Club President Andrea Neighbors attended the conference.

Ruth Moran of Christiansburg won the May drawing for the Woman's Club Heritage Quilt. The quilt featured Virginia wildflowers cross-stitched by members and friends of the Woman's Club. The raffle netted $1,200 for the club's main project, Babies into Books.

Dana Richard Spencer of Blacksburg is certified as a charter Fellow of the American Dietetic Association and now can use the designation FADA.

Steve Helm, a computer specialist for the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library, was invited by Apple Computers to speak at the Ties That Bind: Converging Communities Conference in Cupertino, Calif. Helm talked about the library's experiences with the Blacksburg Electronic Village community network and its implications as an economic, collaborative and technical model.

Sherry Hirt of Blacksburg is recipient of the 1994-95 Sweet Adeline of the Year Award. The award is given by the Wilderness Road Chorus, a chapter of the Sweet Adelines, International. Hirt was honored for her leadership, dedication and involvement with chorus activities. A member since 1991, she's served as chorus treasurer, snow chairwoman and costume chairwoman. Hirt sings baritone and is baritone section leader. She lives in Blacksburg with her husband, Tom, and their two daughters.

The Wilderness Road Chorus recently installed new officers: president, Barbara Lawson of Radford; vice president, Marie Showalter of Christiansburg; treasurer, Sue Lowman of Radford; and secretary, Kim Thomas of Blacksburg. Other board members are Deezie Nelson of Christiansburg; Sherry Hirt of Blacksburg; Francis Williams of Newport; and Jo Burroughs of Blacksburg.

Peggy Jonas, Dewey Wilson and Barbara Phlegar, recent retirees of Radford city schools, were honored at a reception given by the Radford School Board and the Radford Education Association.

Jonas was a cafeteria manager at Belle Heth Elementary School; Wilson was an industrial arts teacher at Radford High School and Phlegar was a learning-disabilities teacher at the high school.
