CHURCH DIRECTORY AS CLOSE AS YOUR PHONE

Quick information about churches throughout the New River Valley is available through the New River Valley Church Hotline, a feature of Advanced Computer Services in Christiansburg that has seen a lot of use in the 13 months it has been in operation. The service has logged 7,000 calls since May 1994, including 830 last month and 260 so far this month.

Information about six local churches is provided in the 24-hour hotline. The churches are: Main Street Baptist Church, St. Paul United Methodist Church, Mennonite Fellowship, and Trinity Baptist Church, all in Christiansburg. Blacksburg's Presbyterian Church and White Memorial United Methodist Church in Shawsville are also featured. Any other church may also be included.

The service provides a range of information, including location, weekly worship schedules, office hours, phone numbers and mission statements. To access the hotline, dial 382-2046.

SERVICES

Janet Aquavella will speak at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the New River Valley at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, on Gladewood Drive in Blacksburg. 552-5273.

William Woodson, an author and scholar from Nashville, Tenn., will appear at several area churches and functions in June. On June 17, he'll be at the Church of Christ on South Franklin Street in Christiansburg at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. He'll be at the Laurel Hill Church of Christ in Radford June 18 at 10 and 11 a.m., and June 18-21 at 7:30 p.m. On June 20, Woodson will participate in a breakfast outing to Mabry Mill on the Blue Ridge Parkway, from 8-10 a.m., and then speak at Slate Mountain Church at 11 a.m. June 22-24 he will appear at the Church of Christ on Eighth and Robertson Streets in Radford at 7:30 p.m., and at 10 and 11 a.m, and 6 p.m. on June 25. 763-9825, 639-3550 or 382-3629.

MAKING A JOYFUL NOISE

The 63rd consecutive monthly gospel sing at the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union building On Peppers Ferry Boulevard in Fairlawn will feature the Highland Gospel Singers with the Bluegrass Inspirations and Rita Davis, today, at 7 p.m. 382-4654.

The Southlands Boys will perform southern gospel music Friday at Mt. Mission, on Va. 778, one block off the U.S. 460 bypass near Blacksburg, at 7 p.m. Offerings will be accepted. 382-0911.

The Heavenly Visions will sing gospel music at Cochram's General Store in Floyd June 17 at 7 p.m. 763-3296.

Performing music at Blacksburg Pentecostal Holiness Church, on Warren and Center Streets, June 17, will be the Scotts, at 7 p.m.

The youth choir of Main Street Baptist Church in Christiansburg will present "The Great Artrageous Adventure," a musical, June 18 at 7 p.m. The show is free but offerings will be accepted. 382-2160.

David and the Giants, a band that has been making Christian music for 18 years and recently released their 16th album, "Angels Unaware," will perform at Christiansburg High School July 21 at 7 p.m. Admission is $5. 381-1006.

HAPPENINGS

Grove United Methodist Church on Tyler Avenue in Radford will have a rummage sale today at 8 a.m. 639-2276.

Vacation Bible School at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Radford will run from from Monday through Friday at 7 p.m. "Seaside by the Savior" is the theme of the event, in which participants will "travel" through four ports as they learn about the disciples. Carpools are available. 639-0723.

Vacation Bible School at Merrimac Pentecostal Holiness Church is scheduled for Monday through Friday from 7-9 p.m. The theme is "Jesus' Kids, Totally His." 552-5070.

Dayspring Christian Community's free Vacation Bible School, on Clay and Prospect Streets in Blacksburg, is scheduled for June 19-23, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Youngsters three years old through the 5th grade are welcome. Registration deadline is Friday. 552-7777 or 951-2430.

Vacation Bible School at Castle Rock Baptist Church will be June 19-26 from 7-8:30 p.m. The theme will be "Windows of the World," and a nursery will be provided.

The first annual Women's Day Observance at the First Missionary Baptist Church in New River is set for July 9. The Women's Day Committee is raising money for the church's building fund, and contributions are needed by June 10. 639-5331.

Youths at Auburn United Methodist Church will perform house cleaning, mowing or weeding. Donations will be used to go to a youth conference. 382-4318.

Christian Community Outreach in Radford is having a food outreach on the fourth Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at the OCAW Union Hall in Fairlawn. Food boxes will be available first come, first served to families and people who meet USDA income criteria. 639-5686.

Dwight David Haynes is a newly ordained Baptist minister, and his work has just begun. A 1994 graduate of Piedmont Bible College, Haynes will become a missionary in Singapore.
