Triple murder suspect jailed without bond

ARLINGTON - The suspect in a triple murder at a suburban rooming house was jailed without bond after a court hearing Friday.

Chris Beck, the cousin of one of the victims, faces three murder charges. He was arrested Thursday night at his mother's home in Philadelphia and returned to Northern Virginia. He has not entered a plea.

Florence Marks, 54, an Arlington municipal worker; William Miller, 52, a statistician with the U.S. Department of Labor; and David Kaplan, 34, an editor and reporter with Congressional Quarterly, were found Tuesday night in the house.

Miller owned the house and rented out two floors.

Bell said Beck had argued with Miller, but authorities had no motive for the slayings.

Arlington police say the slayings were the first triple killing in the county since the department began keeping records in the 1940s.

Lesbian mother denied again

RICHMOND - The Virginia Supreme Court on Friday refused to reconsider its ruling that a lesbian should not have custody of her 3-year-old son.

The court ruled in April that Tyler Doustou should stay in the custody of his grandmother, Kay Bottoms, rather than his mother, Sharon Bottoms.

``To be honest with you, I don't know what's going to happen from here,'' Sharon Bottoms said.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which represented Sharon Bottoms, said it has not decided whether to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The lawyer for Kay Bottoms could not be reached for comment.
