MURDER SUSPECT ARRESTED

Virginia State Police arrested a Marion man Friday in connection with the decade-old murder of Barbara Jean Pauley Hunt of Marion.

Roger Dale Dunford, 44, was arrested about 1 p.m. Friday after an indictment was returned by a Smyth County grand jury earlier in the day.

Roy Evans, commonwealth's attorney, said in a news release that the indictments were presented after an intensive investigation by state police agents Cecil Wyatt and Don Lambert and a special grand jury.

The grand jury was called Feb. 14 at the request of the commonwealth attorney's office after new evidence was discovered.

Neither Evans nor Lambert would comment on the evidence or the circumstances of Hunt's Jan. 18, 1985, death.

Dunford faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. He was being held on $225,000 bond. Arraigment is set for Monday.
