SALEM BREAKS LOSING STREAK

Forry Wells went 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored as the Salem Avalanche downed Winston-Salem 7-1 on Friday night in Carolina League action.

Salem (29-33), which had lost four straight and 11 of its past 12, scored all seven of its runs with two outs. The Avalanche took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Brian Culp walked with one out and scored on a two-out double by Edgard Velasquez.

The Avalanche put up two more runs in the sixth. Vincente Garcia, who went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, singled with two out and then Wells hit a liner to center that Winston-Salem centerfielder Donald Broach tried to catch with a diving attempt. Broach could not come up with it and the ball rolled to the wall. Wells ended up with a two-run inside-the-park home run to give Salem a 3-0 lead.

Salem scored two more runs in the eighth inning on RBI singles by Wells and John Giudice that scored Chris Sexton and Wells, respectively, and then added two more in the ninth inning on Culp's two-out, two-run double that plated Sexton and Garcia.

Winston-Salem (31-31) got its only run in the bottom of the sixth on Mike Beggars solo homer to center off Salem starter Matt Pool. Pool (5-4) picked up the win, going 61/3 innings and giving up one run on four hits. Pool walked two and struck out four, and Mike Saipe picked up his second save with 22/3 innings of perfect relief. The Warthogs' Todd Etler (3-6) took the loss after giving up five runs on six hits in 7 2/3 innings.
