GLENVAR STAR HAS EARNED HIS VACATION

Nick Varney finally gets to join his high school friends at the beach Monday.

Don't feel sorry for the Glenvar senior, though. The vacation delay has been well worth it.

Varney, already the winner of two college scholarships - B'nai B'rith and Scott Robertson Memorial - has added the top prize from the Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame's yearly awards.

Varney has been selected as the recipient of the Hall of Fame's Don Holliday Memorial award. The scholarship, named in honor of the late district sales manager for Piedmont Airlines, is worth $6,000 over a four-year period.

``I can't believe I've won all this,'' said Varney, who will attend North Carolina-Greensboro in the fall on a partial golf scholarship.

``Two years ago, I never thought about these scholarships being available. My advice to people is to talk to their guidance counselors, become really involved in school and keep those grades up, and it can happen.''

Counting the Holliday, Robertson and B'nai B'rith, Varney has won more than $15,000 in scholarship awards during the past month.

Varney, 17, competed in three sports at Glenvar and was Timesland's 1994-95 player of the year in two - golf and tennis. He finished fourth academically in his graduating class of 97.

The Holliday scholarship is funded by the annual Holliday Memorial golf tournament. The popular captain's choice event, scheduled for June 24 at Hanging Rock, is sold out for the ninth consecutive year.

``We've brought in more than $80,000 the first eight years and we hope to give the Hall of Fame $10,000 more this year,'' said Jerry English, a member of the Holliday's board of directors. ``By 1996, we hope to increase the Holliday scholarship amount to a total of $10,000.''

ROBERTSON UPDATE: Because of burgeoning interest, Scott Robertson Memorial tournament officials have elected to add a division for girls ages 13-14 in this year's tournament. In previous years, all girls competed in one age bracket.

As of Wednesday, 151 entries from 23 states had been received for the Aug.7-10 tournament at Roanoke Country Club. The entry list includes junior champions from six states, two state match-play champions, two Bobby Bowers winners and one Donald Ross titlist.

The total field has been boosted to 198 spots. Entry deadline is June 23.

COSTLY 15TH STICK: While some speculated that Virginia choked at the recent NCAA East Regional in New Haven, Conn., the Cavaliers' biggest blunder was not being able to count.

The Cavaliers, ranked 12th in the nation and considered a shoo-in for the NCAA Tournament, missed the big show because one of their players had too many clubs in his bag.

After three holes of the first round, UVa's Cole Kelly discovered he had been carrying 15 clubs, one more than the limit. UVa incurred a four-stroke penalty and missed qualifying by two shots.

KENRIDGE RECAP: Southwest Virginia stalwarts Keith Decker and David Brogan finished second and third, respectively, in the recent Kenridge Invitational at Charlottesville's Farmington Country Club.

Richmond's David Partridge shot a 1-under-par 209 to beat Decker by three and Brogan by four. It was Partridge's fifth Kenridge title.

Jake Allison paced the Roanoke contingent, tying for ninth at 222. Other top-finishing area players and their totals: Lexington's J.W. Entsminger (223); Roanoke's Barry Wolfe (224); Blacksburg's David Chalmers (226); Roanoke's Mike Smith (226); Martinsville's Bill Sibbick (227); Roanoke's Ned Baber (230); and Roanoke's Jack Tuttle (231).

Wolfe's second-round 2-under 68 tied him for low round of the tournament. It was the first bogey-free round in Wolfe's golfing career.

SAND BLASTS: Jim DeMallie, an All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference performer as a senior at Roanoke College in 1989, recently lost in a playoff for the final U.S. Open spot in qualifying in Purchase, N.Y. The Worcester, Mass., native is a teaching professional at Tamarack in Greenwich, Conn. ... Zone qualifying for the AMF-Signet Open and Virginia State Golf Association State Amateur will be held Monday at Roanoke Country Club. The State Am will be played June 28 through July 2 at Stoney Creek in Wintergreen. ... The VSGA's ``Hook A Kid on Golf'' programs will be offered June 19-23 at Hanging Rock and Bedford's Ivy Hill Golf Club. The Hanging Rock contact is Teri Atkins (703-375-3057) and the Ivy Hill contact is Mike Smith (703-586-7161). ... Because of a production error, the credentials of All-Timesland golfer Brian Hill were omitted from Tuesday's editions. The Northside High School senior finished fourth in the Blue Ridge District regular season and tied for third in the district tournament.
