NEW EXPERIENCE FOR RADFORD

Radford University could have a roster made up entirely of upperclassmen for the first time in the history of its men's basketball program, but coach Ron Bradley will have a few new combinations at his disposal.

Junior college transfers Kojak Williams and Marquiz Williamson will be joined by 6-7 Mike Petin, who becomes eligible this year after transferring from North Carolina-Wilmington, and redshirted guard Damian Ingram.

Ingram was the only Radford player who accepted Bradley's offer of a redshirt year after the Big South Conference lost its automatic NCAA Tournament bid for 1995.

At VMI, first-year coach Bart Bellairs brought in four players, including Matt Matheny from Cave Spring High School and 6-7 Brent Conley, who prepped at Fork Union Military Academy after leading West Virginia in scoring as a senior at Fayetteville High School.

``I think he was very under-recruited,'' Fork Union coach Fletcher Arritt said of Conley. ``Why? Because I had to play him at center. I think he's a high-major power forward. We went to Hargrave, where there were about 15 Division prospects on the floor, and he had 30 [points] and 10 [rebounds].''

Roanoke College received commitments from five players, all 6-3 to 6-5. Coach Page Moir noted that 6-4 Chris Cunningham from Hagerstown, Md., was considered a Division I prospect at one point and had thought of going to prep school in hopes of attracting scholarship interest.

At Ferrum, coach Bill Pullen had nearly 20 players at the start of practice last season, so a weeding-out process took place before the Panthers could start recruiting. Pullen added two Richmond-area players, including 6-6 Jason Morris from John Marshall, who could play early because of his height.

Washington and Lee's recruiting was virtually completed before new coach Kevin Moore was hired. The Generals' top target for much of the year was all-prep league selection Brian Jamison, a point guard from Christchurch School who has a chance to replace 1994-95 senior Tyler Duvall.
