EX-UVA PITCHER BEATS AVALANCHE

WINSTON-SALEM'S Todd Ruyak hands Salem a 5-1 loss in his first start.

Former Virginia standout Todd Ruyak gave up three hits and one run in his first start of the season, leading the Winston-Salem Warthogs past the Salem Avalanche 5-1 on Saturday night in Carolina League action.

Ruyak (2-1), usually a reliever, made his first start as Winston-Salem shakes up its rotation now that the Warthogs have been mathematically eliminated from the Southern Division title race. Ruyak went five innings, walking two and striking out two. Jason Kummerfeldt and Scott McKenzie shut the door on Salem the rest of the way.

Ruyak got all the support he needed in the first inning as the Warthogs (32-31) put three runs on the board against Salem starter Doug Walls. Dee Jenkins led off the game by taking Walls' first pitch over the right-field wall. After Johnny Bess walked, Mike Meggers followed with his 12th homer of the season and second in as many games, a two-run shot, to give the Warthogs a 3-0 lead.

Winston-Salem added a run in the second when Guillermo Garcia walked with one out. Ricky Magdaleno struck out and Jenkins walked to put two on with two out. Bess followed with a single to center to score Garcia with the Warthogs' fourth run.

Salem (29-34) scored its only run in the fourth. Forry Wells led off the inning with a walk and went to second on a groundout by Nate Holdren. After Mike Higgins grounded out, Steve Bernhardt smacked a single to center, scoring Wells.

Walls (3-4) took the loss, going 5 1/3 innings and giving up five runs on five hits and four walks.
