WRIGHT, AVALANCHE REPEL WARTHOGS

Jamey Wright provided a strong start, and some timely hitting helped the Salem Avalanche pitcher pick up his team-leading seventh victory Sunday.

Wright held the Winston-Salem Warthogs to four hits and one earned run in 7 1/3 innings as the Avalanche won 6-3 in Carolina League game.

The Salem right-hander retired the first 11 Warthogs in order before giving up a hit. He lost his bid for a shutout when former Salem Buccaneer Danny Clyburn led off the seventh with his 11th home run. Wright (7-4) walked two, struck out three and hit two batters.

The Avalanche (30-34) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Edgard Velasquez and Keith Grunewald drew back-to-back walks with one out, and both moved up on a double-steal. Nate Holdren's two-out single brought in both runners.

Salem made it 4-0 in the fifth. Mark Wells led off and reached on an error by first baseman Ray Brown. He went to second on a single to center by Holdren. Yohel Pozo's sacrifice sent the runners to second and third, and Warthogs starter Chris Reed walked Chris Sexton intentionally to load the bases. Reed (3-2) then walked Vincente Garcia and Brian Culp to force in the runs and end the pitcher's day.

After Clyburn's home run in the seventh, Dee Jenkins singled off Wright with one out and Danny Oyas was hit by a pitch. With Ricky Magdaleno batting, Pozo, the Avalanche's catcher, tried to pick Oyas off first and threw the ball into rightfield as both runners advanced. Wright's wild pitch allowed Jenkins to score and brought on reliever Scott LaRock, who got out of the jam.

Velasquez's one-out double set the stage for a two-run eighth inning. Grunewald's single to center scored Velasquez. Mark Wells then hit a grounder to first, but Brown's throw to second for the force pulled shortstop Magdaleno off the bag.

Winston-Salem (32-32) scored an unearned run against LaRock in the eighth, and Matt Aminoff pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his sixth save for the Avalanche.
