HIGH WATER HALTS SEARCH FOR MAN IN TINKER CREEK

For the second day in a row, rescue workers had to call off their search for a Roanoke man who jumped into the rain-swollen Tinker Creek in Vinton Saturday evening.

The muddy creek got too high after Sunday afternoon's storms for searchers to look for William W. Snyder, 52, of Roanoke.

Snyder jumped into the creek around 7 p.m. Saturday and disappeared, according to Vinton Police Chief Rick Foutz. Vinton police, fire and rescue workers and the Stewartsville rescue squad searched for Snyder until 10:30 Saturday night, but had to stop because of darkness.

The search started again Sunday about 8:30 a.m., but was called off at 4:30 p.m. just after short but heavy storm hit the area.

Tinker Creek runs along the Vinton-Roanoke border for about two miles before it meets the Roanoke River just below the sewage treatment plant in Southeast Roanoke.
