Pulaski recognized

PULASKI - Pulaski Encouraging Progress has been ranked by an economic development magazine as one of the top 10 groups promoting economic development in 1994.

The magazine, Site Selection, based PEP's inclusion not only on its work to attract new industries but helping existing industries expand.

The magazine cited PEP for its role in keeping the Volvo-GM Heavy Truck Corp. plant in Pulaski County where it is now expanding, its work in finding new industrial sites, and its cooperation with surrounding localities.

"PEP's teamwork-based response to a critical challenge played a big role in helping land 1,000 new jobs and $200 million in new corporate capital investments for Pulaski County," the magazine said.

PEP started in 1987 as a cooperative effort among Pulaski County, the towns of Pulaski and Dublin, and the Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce to get state industrial certification for the county. After that was achieved, its volunteer members continued working in the industrial area.

Arrests for good cause

$5,000 for 'Sly Sam'

DUBLIN - A $5,000 prize will be awarded to the person who catches a specially tagged bass called "Sly Sam," at the Claytor Lake State Park Family Fishing Tournament. In its 10th year, the annual tournament is scheduled June 24.

Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded in youth (13 and under) and adult divisions for catching the largest fish in the following five categories: small mouth bass, large mouth bass, catfish, crappie and sunfish. The first place prize in the adult division is $50 and a trophy; the winning prize in the youth division is $25 and a trophy. A consolation prize will be awarded if "Sly Sam" is caught after the tournament but before Sept. 6. Other tournament activities include a free scenic cruise on the Pioneer Maid and lecture on Claytor Lake wildlife.

The event will start at 8 a.m., rain or shine, at the Claytor Lake State Park gazebo. Anglers must have a registration card to participate. For registration and rules, call 382-4993.
