Keffer and Clemens will be among six local golfers representing Zone 9 at amateur competition to be held June 28-July 2 at Stoney Creek in Wintergreen. They will be joined by David Havens of Wytheville and Rodney Naff of Roanoke, who each shot a 71, and J.W. Entsminger of Lexington and Scott Hunter of Roanoke, who each carded a 72.

The top 10 golfers will represent Zone 9 at the Signet State Open July 20-23 at Willow Oaks Country Club in Richmond. The six amateur qualifiers will be joined by Scott Griffin of Fincastle and Adam Harrell of Salem, who each finished at 73, and Jack Allara and Ryan Ketron of Roanoke, who tied at 74.

Buck Brittain shot a two-round total of 138 to lead qualifying at Fincastle Country Club. Charlie Green finished at 146 to take the second state open spot. Ron Lowe, who had a 147, picked up the last state amateur spot.

The University of Virginia women's heavyweight four with coxswain crew team won the U.S. Rowing Association's National Collegiate Championship Regatta in record time Saturday. The Cavaliers finished in 6 minutes, 57.4 seconds, two lengths ahead of second-place Syracuse, and broke the course record by seven seconds.

UVa's women's lightweight four with coxswain team finished fifth in a seven-boat race, two seconds behind Pennsylvania, the bronze medal winners.

The heavyweight crew (46-4) captured four championships this spring, including the Southern Intercollegiate Championship Regatta. With the national championships, the women's crew completed its last season as a self-supporting club. Beginning this fall, women's crew becomes Virginia's 24th varsity sport, under the direction of head coach Kevin Sauer.
