EXHIBIT LOOKS AT SOAP BOX DERBY CARS

``The Soap Box Derby Then and Now'' will open at the Virginia Museum of Transportation on July 1 and run through July 23.

The exhibit will feature a variety of racers representing the past and present. A working model will show visitors the inner workings of a Soap Box Derby race car.

On opening day, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Derby representatives will present workshops on building a Derby car. Visitors can meet past Derby winners and some of this year's drivers, who will be showing off their race cars.

The Roanoke Valley Soap Box Derby will be held as part of the Commonwealth Games on July 15. The winning car will compete in the All American Soap Box Derby Championship in Ohio on Aug. 5.

The Virginia Museum of Transportation is in Roanoke's historic freight station at 303 Norfolk Ave. Hours are Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.
