Trent, director of guitar and flute studies at Radford University, recently became the first and only person to receive a doctorate of musical arts in guitar from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. He also premiered recently-discovered Franz Schubert works for piano and solo voice. He performed the Schubert pieces on a 1830 guitar.
More than 100 Radford University employees, faculty and staff were honored at an annual service recognition banquet. Three employees were selected for special Radford Presidential Service Awards. They are Holly Shannon of Radford, secretary to the dean of the College of Education and Human Development; Danny Coalson of Pulaski, supervisor in the printing department; and Bonnie Akers of Riner, an office service specialist in facilities management.
Recipients were nominated by their peers and supervisors and later selected by a committee. Each received a plaque of recognition and $500.
Mike Ashley has been named the new sports information director at Radford University. A native of Salem, Ashley graduated from Radford in 1983 and has been as associate sports information director since 1987. His responsibilities will include coordinating publicity for the Highlanders' athletic programs and its 17 Division I varsity sports.
Ashley replaces Rick Rogers, who resigned from the position to become director of electronic communications for the university's Office of Public Information and Relations. Rogers served as the sports information director at Radford since 1978.
Virginia Tech
Michael W. Carroll was recently appointed associate vice president for development at Virginia Tech. Carroll has been acting associate vice president since January and is responsible for the university's development office operations, including all the university's various fund raising programs.
Since coming to Tech in 1988, Carroll has served as director of capital support and director of development for athletic programs.
A Virginia Tech faculty member has been elected 1996-97 president of the American Vocational Association. Daisy Stewart will begin her term as president-elect this month and will serve as national president starting June 1996.
Steward works in the College of Education in the Division for Vocational Technical Education. She's been at the university since 1980.
