SUPERVISOR JOE STEWART IS A ROCK-BUSTIN' MAN|

If you want a job done right, sometimes you just have to do it yourself. Even if you're 80 years old and the job is smashing large rocks into small pieces with a sledgehammer.

Just ask Montgomery County Supervisor Joe Stewart.

The 15-year Board of Supervisors member for Elliston and Shawsville took matters into his own hands recently when he noticed some rocks had rolled down to the side of Virginia 603, near an infamous narrow passage between Ironto and Elliston known as "The Bluffs."

The six rocks had been reported to the authorities, but remained in place by the time Stewart drove by on his way to a dentist's appointment.

So before driving back home to Elliston, the livestock auctioneer and farmer stopped by a hardware store and shelled out $18.

"I went and bought me a sledgehammer and bust up that rock," Stewart reported Monday to his board colleagues.

"It's taken care of."
