VINTON CALLS OFF SEARCH FOR MAN IN TINKER CREEK

Vinton authorities on Tuesday afternoon called off their search for a 52-year-old man who disappeared in Tinker Creek. Divers, rescue workers, police and search dogs meticulously searched a 11/2-mile section of the creek for almost three days, looking for William Snyder.

"I'm confident he's not in that section of Tinker Creek, because we walked that whole section," Vinton Police Chief Rick Foutz said. "We've got nowhere else to look."

Snyder dove into the rising waters of the creek about 7 p.m. Saturday. The rescue effort began soon after, interrupted twice by rising water. Tuesday morning, rescue workers formed a human chain across the water and walked the shallow creek. They found nothing.

Between 30 and 40 search and rescue workers joined the effort.
