REPORTED EARNINGS

Brendle's Inc., Elkin, N.C.-based retailer, reported a net loss of $3.8 million, equal to 30 cents per share, on revenues of $24.2 million for its first quarter ended April 29, compared with year-earlier net income of $24.8 million, or $2.96 per share, on revenue of $25.9 million.

Circuit City Stores

Circuit CIty Stores Inc., Richmond-based electronics and used-car retailer, reported net earnings of $24.6 million, or 25 cents per share, on sales of $1.39 billion for its first quarter ended May 31, compared with year-earlier $19.7 million, or 20 cents per share, on sales of $1.05 billion.

Mail Boxes Etc.

Mail Boxes Etc., San Diego franchisor and operator of postal and business-service stores, including operations in the Roanoke Valley, reported net income of $6.8 million, or 60 cents per share, on revenues of $50.4 million for its fiscal year ended April 30, compared with year-earlier $6 million, or 49 cents per share, on revenues of $43.9 million. For its fourth quarter, net income was $1.8 million, or 16 cents per share, on revenues of $13.1 million, compared with year-earlier $68,000, or a penny per share, on revenues of $9.0 million.

Smithfield Foods

Smithfield Foods Inc., Smithfield, Va., parent of Valleydale Foods Inc. of Salem, reported net income of $27.8 million, or $1.59 per share, on sales of $1.53 billion for its fiscal year ended April 30, compared with year-earlier $19.7 million or $1.13 per share, on sales of $1.40 billion. For its fourth quarter, net income was $338,000, or a penny per share, on sales of $381.6 million, compared with year-earlier $7.4 million, or 43 cents per share, on sales of $353.9 million.
