AVALANCHE GIVES KING ROYAL TREATMENT IN LOSS

Andre King went 4-for-5 with two singles, a double and a triple and scored two runs to lead the Durham Bulls past the Salem Avalanche 8-2 on Tuesday night in Carolina League baseball.

King led off the bottom of the first with a triple off Salem pitcher Keith Barnes and scored on Danny Magee's single. Gator McBride walked and Raymond Nunez, who was sent to Durham despite hitting two homers for Class AA Greenville on Monday night, singled to score Magee. Nunez took second on a passed ball and scored on a single by David Toth as Durham went up 3-0.

Durham (27-35) added a run in the fourth on John Knott's solo homer to take a 4-0 lead. Barnes (3-4) pitched four innings, giving up four runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out four.

Salem (30-35) managed to cut the lead to 4-2 in the fifth. Chris Sexton walked and Vincente Garcia singled with two out. Edgard Velasquez hit a bloop double to score Sexton, and Brian Culp hit a single to score Garcia. Velasquez was thrown out at home by McBride for the third out.

The Bulls responded with an unearned run in the fifth and two runs in the seventh, on Mickey Correa's solo homer and McBride's RBI single, to put away the game. Micah Bowie (1-5) picked up his first victory despite giving up 10 hits in seven innings as the Avalanche helped him by hitting into four double plays and leaving eight men on base.
