NRCC GETS GRANT

New River Community College is one of four institutions in the Virginia Community College System to participate in a new instructional telecommunications network funded by Bell Atlantic.

NRCC received a $50,000 grant that will create a partnership with three other community colleges delivering distance education courses. The courses will be broadcast through compressed video, a portable and expandable medium which transmits high resolution images and accompanying audio over telephone lines, rather than by satellite.

The college will provide personnel training for the network, which is scheduled for operation by fall.

The NRCC has also received a $10,372 grant from the State Council of Higher Education to use for student recruitment and retention programs targeted toward minority students. NRCC is one of nine community colleges in the state to receive funding from SCHEV.
