Volunteer drivers sought

CHRISTIANSBURG - The American Cancer Society needs volunteers to help transport cancer patients to and from their medical appointments.

Many patients can lead productive lives during treatment, but that treatment can require daily visits to a medical office for five or six weeks. Transporting them can be a burden for family and friends, cancer society officials say.

The society's Road to Recovery program offers help to patients and their loved ones. Anyone with a car, a valid Virginia driver's license, safe driving skills and as little as one morning or afternoon a month can provide assistance.

The society is also looking for volunteer transportation coordinators to oversee transportation services.
