VETERANS WILL RUN IN FRANKLIN

Two members of the Franklin County School Board decided this week to run in the county's first board election in November.

Jack H. Newbill, a School Board member for nearly 26 years, will run unopposed for the Gills Creek District seat. Guy W. Buford, who has served on the board nearly 16 years, will run unopposed for the Boone District seat.

Newbill and Buford were reappointed by the county's School Board selection commission Tuesday to serve an additional six months, from July 1 to Dec. 31.

Franklin County voters approved a switch from appointing School Board members to electing them in a vote last November.

This November, voters will elect eight board members - one for each of seven districts and one member to represent the entire county.

Only one current School Board member will not run for election in November. Herman M. Craig, who represents the Snow Creek District, chose not to seek election.

The School Board candidates are: Perry D. Hambrick, unopposed for the Union Hall District; G.D. Washburn Jr. against Terry M. Lovell for the Snow Creek District; incumbent Gilda Q. Woods against Carl W. Dudley for the Blue Ridge District; incumbent Shirley B. Jamison against Van L. Flora for the Blackwater District; Stephen D. Flora will run unopposed for the Rocky Mount District; and incumbent William O. Helm will run against Amanda F. Davis for the at-large position.

Newly elected School Board members will take office Jan. 1.
