UNC PLAYER TAKES LEAD AT HOT SPRINGS

Mark Catalano captured medalist honors by six strokes Wednesday after two rounds of qualifying at the 78th Western Junior Golf Championship in Hot Springs.

The 19-year-old North Carolina sophomore from Columbus, Ohio, had a 5-under 66 Tuesday on The Homestead's Lower Cascades course and a 73 Wednesday on the Cascades for a 139.

Kevin Angle of Charlotte, N.C., finished second with a two-day total 145.

Roger Lavoie of Pasco, Wash., was third low among the 196 players with 146.

Roland Thatcher of Woodlands, Texas, a member of the Auburn golf team, and Todd Lancaster of Oxford, Ohio, who plays for Kent State, shared fourth with 147s.

Also among the 64 qualifiers, who begin match play today to reduce the field to 16, were Wes Latimer of Woodstock, Ga.; Tommy Anderson of Lake Mary, Fla., and James Driscoll of Chestnut Hill, Mass., all tied at 148.

In other sports news:

Two members of the Roanoke Valley wrestling club won their divisions in the Virginia State Games in Richmond. Josh Baker won the 114-122-pound folk style cadet championship, and Jan Sessor won the title in the 156-171 freestyle open division and was second in the folk style open division.

Roanoke Valley's Bryce O'Baugh was third in both the freestyle and folk style 84-89 schoolboy divisions. Other Roanoke Valley wrestlers posting top-three finishes were Daniel Wagner (2nd, folk style and freestyle 180-191 junior), Brian Morris (3rd, freestyle 148-154 cadet), Kenny Moore (freestyle 165-170 cadet), Corey Walker (freestyle 105-112 junior), Roy Hedrick (folk style 159-165 junior).
