Golf tournament to benefit programs

A charity golf tournament to benefit The Adult Care Center of Roanoke Valley will be held on June 30 at Countryside Golf Course.

The entry fee is $200 per team. Proceeds will benefit adult day care and programs for the the elderly in the community. For more information or to enter call 983-1026.

Star Green Team is tourney runner-up

The Roanoke Stars Under 14 Green Team was runner-up in the Gold Division of the fourth annual Marietta Times Soccer Classic in Marietta, Ohio.

The Stars defeated the Liederkranz Strikers from Madison, Ohio and the Charleston Power of Charleston, W.Va. to advance to the championship.

Students place in Odyssey finals

Fourteen students from Community School and Stonewall Jackson Middle School, competed in the recent Odyssey of the Mind World Finals in Knoxville, Tenn. Each school had a seven-member team with students ages 12 to 14.

Community School team members were Bobby Bursey, Aaron Coulter, Chad Hooper, Rylin Laplant, Whet Moser, Shaena Robison and Sam Spies.

Community placed 13th among 63 teams competing in the Classics Vaudeville category.

The Jackson Middle School team members were Angel Hall, Lisa Hart, Juan Kuilan, Amy Martin, Lindsay Musser, Matt McLeod and Chad Ricker.

Jackson finished 17th among 57 teams in the New Twist competition for youngsters in middle schools.

The competition attracted more than 700 teams and 5,000 students from around the world. The teams are scored on long-term and spontaneous problem solving, creativity and stylistic skills in a group presentation.
