RENOVATED WASENA ELEMENTARY TO HAVE A NEW PRICIPAL

Wasena Elementary School in Roanoke will get a new principal when it reopens this fall after being closed a year for renovation.

Roger Magerkurth, a former principal of Virginia Heights Elementary School, has been named Wasena principal.

For the past two years, Magerkurth has headed the Villa Heights Education Center, a special-education school.

He was principal at Virginia Heights Elementary from 1991 to 1993. Prior to that, he was assistant principal at Fallon Park Elementary.

William Lalik, who was principal at Wasena when it closed for renovation, has been named principal at Monterey Elementary. George Bell, who was Monterey's principal, is on sick leave.

Lalik served as a research assistant in instruction for the city before he became Monterey's principal. He is a former principal at Crystal Spring Elementary School and has taught at several city schools.

School Superintendent Wayne Harris said school officials will begin interviews soon for vacancies in the principal's job at three other schools.

Linda Wright has resigned as principal at Westside Elementary to become principal of Penn Forest Elementary in Roanoke County. She succeeded Patricia Sales, who retired after 18 years in the post.

William Shepherd is retiring as Hurt Park Elementary principal after more than 30 years in education, including 22 years with the Roanoke school system.

James Wilson has resigned as William Ruffner Middle School principal for family reasons.

Harris said there is always some turnover in the principal posts, but the number this year is no larger than usual.

"I consider these appointments to be among the most important that we make," he said.
