Edgard Velasquez went 4-for-5 and Forry Wells homered for Salem (31-35), which closes out a three-game series with the Bulls tonight.
The Avalanche won with a three-run sixth inning. Trailing 6-5, Salem tied it on Wells' RBI single then took the lead on Nate Holdren's infield hit that scored Vincente Garcia. Velasquez followed with a single to score Wells and make it 8-6.
Durham (27-36) scored once in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run on second base but Matt Aminoff forced Scott Pagano to ground out to Holdren at first. It was Aminoff's seventh save.
Wells' two-run shot with two out in the top of the third inning tied the score at 3-3. Durham scored in the third and fourth to make it 5-3, but Salem rallied again in the sixth.
Valasquez doubled to right field then scored on John Giudice's single. Giudice stole second base and scored on Keith Grunewald's double to make it 5-5.
Curt Conley (2-1) pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to get the victory.
Both of his victories have come against Durham.
Garcia and Wells had two hits for Salem.
