IN SCHOOL

THE CENTER FOR TALENTED YOUTH at Johns Hopkins University honored several students from the Roanoke Valley recently for outstanding verbal and math skills.

The center tested fifth and sixth graders in 19 states and recognized those who scored at or above the eighth- and ninth-grade testing level. Seventh graders also were honored if they scored above the high school mean for College Board SAT tests.

The following Roanoke-area students were honored: John Anderson, James Madison Middle School; Ryan Blackwell, Cave Spring Junior High; Kyle Blusher, Roanoke Valley Christian; Brandon Bodine, Addison Aerospace; Trey Boone, James Madison Middle School; Patrick Fitzgibbon, Hidden Valley Junior High; David Good, Cave Spring Junior High; Robert Krell, North Cross; Brianna Kurtz, Hidden Valley Junior High; Robert Lalka, Hidden Valley Junior High; Stephanie Lebow, Green Valley Elementary; Tedon McAdoo, James Madison Middle School; Mary O'Connell, Roanoke Catholic; Aditya Reddy, Green Valley Elementary; Cristen Richardson, Roanoke Catholic; Carter Ross, Cave Spring Junior High; Andrew Rosti, South Salem Elementary; Abbey Rowe, South Salem Elementary; Kyle Singleton, Hidden Valley Junior High; David Whitlow, South Salem Elementary; Romney Willson, James Madison Middle School; and Kimberly Lugar, William Byrd Middle.

JANIE SUE WOOD, of Roanoke, recently graduated with an associates degree in liberal arts from Regents College.

THE THURSDAY MORNING MUSIC CLUB has announced scholarship winners from the three junior clubs it sponsors: Whole Notes Club for elementary students, Harmonic-Virtuoso Club for upper grades, and Foot Notes Club for dancers.

After competitions, the scholarship committee awarded stipends to the following students: Catherine Sipher, piano, $100 cash awards; Jaime Anne Robitson, dance, $100; Kristin Myers Lynch, violin; Justin R. Marlles, violin; Rachael Perrott, piano; Daniel Reese, piano; Tiffany Sandifer, flute; William R. Smith, dance; Jaime Anne Robitson, dance, all $250 for summer workshop.

The college scholarship awards went to Katherine M. Saville, piano, $700; and Katie Hall, voice, $2,000.

GWEN SIBERT has been selected as the Outstanding Chemistry Teacher for 1995 by the Blue Ridge Section of the American Chemical Society. The Roanoke Valley Governor's School Chemistry teacher also won the award in 1985. In recent years, Sibert's students have placed nationally in the Westinghouse Schince Talent Search, the International Science and Engineering Fair, and the Virginia Junior Academy of Science.

SHANE WARNER, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Warner of Vinton has been named to the president's list at Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tenn. for the spring semester.

ANITA SUZANNE HOBACK, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis L. Hoback of Vinton, recently graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman's College. She received a bachelor of arts degree in communication.

WASHINGTON and LEE UNIVERSITY recently announced the names of Roanoke- area law schoolgraduates. They are: Keith A. Dame, son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Dame of Salem, juris doctor degree, magna cum laude; David D. Lawrence, son of Mr. Richard Lee Lawrence of Roanoke, juris doctor degree; John A. Boone, son of Mr. and Mrs. G.L. Boone of Roanoke, juris doctor degree.

KIMBERLY FRAZIER DALTON, daughter of Jerry and Diana Dalton of Roanoke, recently graduated from Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C. She received a bachelor of science degree in biology.

LARRY MICHAEL STEVENS II of Roanoke was recently named to the dean's list at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City for the spring semester.

PATRICIA CARR of Roanoke was one of six artists/teachers chosen in a nationwide competition to attend the Teacher-Artist Program of the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation and the National Art Education Association. She is a teacher at Roanoke County School in Salem. The program recognizes outstanding professional art educators for exemplary teaching and artistic achievement.

CHRIS HAYTH, son of Roy Hayth of Roanoke, has recently received a President's Youth Service Award from President Bill Clinton. The award was based on hands-on and long-term service achievements. Hayth is a junior at Radford University.

DAVID SAMUEL PERRIN of Roanoke has been named to the vice president's honor roll at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado.

RHONDA ANN STULTZ HOWARD, daughter of F. Earl and Anna Stultz of Salem, recently earned a bachelor of arts degree in liberal studies from Virginia Wesleyan College. She was a 1967 graduate of Northside High School.

CADET DAVID O. PHELPS II, son of David and Brenda Phelps of Roanoke, was recently selected as a winner of the Society of Physics Students 1994 Lecture Demonstration Contest. Students had to develop 15-minute demonstrations on the subject of interference. Phelps recently graduated from Virginia Military Institute in Lexington with a bachelor of science in physics.

CAVE SPRING HIGH SCHOOL and FLEMING-RUFFNER MAGNET CENTER received School of the Year awards from EF Foundation for Foreign Study. The schools were chosen for their dedication to foreign exchange students by involving them in the life of the school, guiding them during the year, and supporting their host families.

EAST TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITYin Johnson City has announced the names of Roanoke-area graduates. Kimberly A. Bishop of Roanoke, bachelor of science in applied human sciences; Brian S. Davis of Roanoke, bachelor of science in engineering technology; David R. Hurd of Roanoke, bachelor of science in computer and information science; and Donna M. Wheeler of Vinton, bachelor of business administration in finance.

THE COLLEGE OF WILLIAM AND MARY has announced the names of Roanoke area graduates.

Those from Roanoke are: Kristofor Zachary Brittle, bachelor of arts; Andrew Michael Hartman, bachelor of arts; Stacy Elaine Horne, bachelor of arts; Stewart Davidson Myers, bachelor of arts; Jennifer Marie Phelan, bachelor of arts; J.D. Llanto Quioco, bachelor of arts; Mary Elizabeth Reed, bachelor of arts; Melissa Dawn Sparks, bachelor of arts; Jessica Ann Johnson, bachelor of business administration; Julie Dinwiddie McGhee, bachelor of science; Alisa Ann Wood, bachelor of science; Keith G. Lange, bachelor of arts; Torino Ravon Jennings, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hash, bachelor of science; James Lee Camden Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. James L. Camden, bachelor of arts; Ian McDade, son of Mr. and Mrs. Neil McDade, bachelor of science; and Thomas Lee Boehling, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas L. Boehling, bachelor of arts.

NORTHERN VIRGINIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE recently announced the names of Roanoke-area students in its 10th annual Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair. They are: Deepa Channaiah, William Byrd High School, honorable mention, chemistry and United States Army; Taylor Jones, Patrick Henry High School, honorable mention, physics; Catherine Airey, Northside High School, first prize, American Water Works Association.

THE ROANOKE VALLEY REGIONAL PROGRAM FOR THE DEAF recently annuonced the winners of the International Creative Arts Festival. They are: Heather McClure, first in the poetry contest, Patrick Henry High School; and Kelly Short, second in short story writing and poetry writing, Patrick Henry; Jessica Adams, Little Miss Personality, Virginia Heights Elementary School; Shane Adams, second runner-up Little Mister Personality, Virginia Heights Elementary School; Christy Bowers, best costume, Virginia Heights Elementary School; Jackie Carl, best interview, Virginia Heights Elementary School; Dewayne Hardy, best sports presentation, Virginia Heights Elementary School.

HEATHER LEE O'BRIEN and DENISE MERRIMAN JOYCE, both of Roanoke, recently graduated from East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. O'Brien and Joyce both received a bachelor of science degree.

NEW RIVER COMMUNITY COLLEGE has announced the names of Roanoke-area students to honor lists.

Regina B. Gravely of Roanoke was named to the president's list.

John I. Moore of Roanoke and Christopher T. Arnold of Blue Ridge were named to the dean's list.

CURRIE WELLS and JAY THOMAS, both of Roanoke, recently graduated from Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C.

Wells received a bachelor's degree in psychology, and Thomas received a bachelor's degree in geology.

MARY WASHINGTON COLLEGE recently announced the names of Roanoke-area graduates.

They are: Jennifer K.
