Durham scored four runs in a fifth-inning uprising and Ryan Jacobs won his second straight start as the Bulls shut out Salem 5-0 on Thursday night in the Carolina League game, taking the rubber game of the three-game series.
The loss by the Avalanche ensures that Salem will not have a winning first-half. Salem (31-36), which has not had a winning first half since 1988, had seven hits for the game, but only one good opportunity to score. The Avalanche had runners at first and third with one out in the top of the sixth, but Jacobs (2-2) got Keith Grunewald to hit into an inning-ending double play to kill the rally.
The Bulls (28-36) took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. Sean Smith doubled off Matt Pool to lead off the second and went to third on a groundout by Mickey Correa. With two outs, Lou Benbow singled to left to score Smith for the game's first run.
Durham broke the game open in the fifth inning. Andre King singled to right with two outs and Scott Pogano followed with another single to right. A wild pitch by Pool moved the runners up a base and another wild pitch by Pool brought King home to give Durham a 2-0 lead. Randal Simon then singled to score Pogano with the Bulls' third run, and John Knott finished the rally with a two-run homer to right center field. - his second of the series - for all the runs Durham would need.
Pool (5-5) went six innings, giving up nine hits and five runs in picking up the loss. Jacobs went six innings and gave up six hits while walking two and striking out seven.
The Avalanche finish up the first half of the season with a three-game against Frederick starting today.
