AYERS, William Berry, 64, of Santa Fe, N.M., died Tuesday, June 13, 1995, at his home. He was born in Roanoke on November 29, 1930, the son of the late William Gulin Ayers and Gertrude Plymale Ayers, who now resides in Rural Hall, N.C. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was retired from the Defense Department. He is survived by his wife, Nanette Ayers; two sons, Timothy and William Ayers, all of Santa Fe, N.M.; seven brothers and sisters, Mary Alice Zamorski, Joyce Wheeling, Judith Overstreet, Wayne P. Ayers, all of Salem, Wendell Ayers, Yorktown, James Jensen, Rural Hall, N.C., James Ayers, Chester. Arrangements will be in Santa Fe, N.M.
BOWER, Lucille Britt, 89, of Christiansburg, went to be with the Lord, on Wednesday, June 14, 1995, at Radford Community Hospital. She was the widow of Kyle Bower Sr.; and is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Kyle Jr. and Carol C. Bower; two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara B. and Leo Middleton Jr., Betty B. and James D. Dunford, all of Christiansburg; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday from the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. D. O. Weaver Jr., with interment in Sunset Cemetery. BROWNING, Jack Dillard, 68, was called home by his Savior, Thursday, June 15, 1995, after battling a long illness at his home. He was born in Roanoke, September 18, 1926, the son of Ethel Browning Shepperd. Mr. Browning was semi-retired from Valley Metro. Jack was a decorated veteran, who served in the U.S. Navy and Air Force. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Bravery & the Purple Heart on D Day 1944 on Omaha Beach. He later served in Korean and Vietnam. He was a deacon at Hollins Road and Green Ridge Baptist Churches. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Surviving are his beloved wife of 43 years, Dorothy ``Dee'' Browning; son and daughter-in-law, Michael Dillard Browning Sr. and Sharon Covey Browning, Pulaski; son, Antony ``Sid'' Browning, Roanoke; grandchildren, Daniel Francis Browning, United Kingdom, David Josiah Perfater and Michael Dillard Browning II, Pulaski, Chelsea Ellen Browning, Roanoke; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Barbara McCallum, Tazewell; aunt, Margaret Harrell, Glenvar; numerous cousins. COSTIGAN, Frank Eldridge, 75, of Blacksburg, passed away Wednesday, June 14, 1995. He was a member of the Ellett Pentecostal Holiness Church and was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Costigan was born in Christiansburg, Va. on June 21, 1919, the son of the late Charles and Mary Lucy Woolwine Costigan. He was a retired painter. Surviving are his wife, Reba Costigan of Blacksburg; three daughters, Connie J. Costigan of Kenbridge, Va., Christine R. Costigan of Christiansburg and Carolyn Nixon of Shawsville; one brother, Charlie M. Costigan, Christiansburg; two sisters, Lucy Reed of Christiansburg and Marjorie Clark of Lynchburg; several nieces and nephews; one grandson. JOHNSON, Ernest Lee, 63, of Route 4, Bedford, died unexpectedly Wednesday, June 14, 1995 in a Roanoke hospital. He was born in Clifton Forge, Va. March 15, 1932, son of the late Cary Burks Johnson and Carrie Cecil Kidd Johnson, and was raised in Covington. He was an employee of the Commonwealth of Virginia for over 33 years, having served 16 years as a State Trooper, 14 years with the Department of Transportation & Safety and three years as the Commonwealth's Occupant Protection Manager. In 1985 he was appointed State Secretary-Treasurer of the Virginia Association of Lions Clubs, serving in that post until his death. Ernie was a loving and gentle man who was dedicated to his family and Lionism. A member of the Bedford Lions Club with perfect attendance for over 30 years, he served on various committees at the local, zone and regional levels. He served as 24-E District Governor in 1975-76 and Past officer and President of the Eye Bank and Research Foundation. He was the recipient of numerous Lions' awards, including Master Key for sponsoring 12 new Lions 100% District Governor Award, the International President's Certificate of Appreciation and the coveted Melvin Jones Fellow Award in 1990. He is survived by his wife, Betty Lee Howard Johnson; a son, Jeff Johnson, Bedford; two daughters and their husbands, Lynda and Jimmy Davenport, Lynchburg, Robin and Kip Gleason, Radford; his sister and her husband, Vina and Roy StClair, Covington; and his grandson, ``the 1990 Baby of the Year "", Michael E. Gleason. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, June 17, 1995 at 1 p.m. at Bedford Baptist Church, with the Rev. Wayne Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. KENNEDY, Earl McCorkle, 80, of Route 5, Bedford, died Wednesday, June 14, 1995, in Woodhaven Nursing Home. He was born in Bedford County on December 3, 1914, a son of the late Henry Benjamin Kennedy and Nettie Leah Ferguson Kennedy. He was a retired farmer and orchardist, and was a member of Laurel Grove Presbyterian Chruch. He is survived by three brothers, H. Carl Kennedy and Harold D. Kennedy, both of Bedford, W. Bennett Kennedy, Arlington Heights, Ill. Also several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at the graveside in Longwood Cemetery Saturday, June 17, 1995, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. KIRK, Reba Martin, 92, of Narrows, died Wednesday, June 14, 1995, at her residence in Narrows. She was born in New Castle, Va., on April 29, 1903, and was the daughter of the late James and Florence Sarver Reynolds. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harry Martin and her second husband, Gene R. Kirk. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She is survived by 4 sons, Clifton L. Martin, Daniel E. Martin, Billy L. Martin, all of Narrows, Jack O. Martin of Pearisburg; two daughters, Izetta M. Mr. Meade was a clothing salesman and was a member of the Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Meade, Avon Park, Fla.; son, James E. MILLER, Wilbur C., (``Pete""), 91, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, June 14, 1995, in a Salem Nursing Home. Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Weeks Miller; his parents, Alice Craum and John William Miller. Surviving is a daughter, Frances W. Birge, of McLean. He was the recipient of the Dairy Technology Achievement Award for 1966. He retired from Pet Milk Company, Roanoke, Va. Mr. Miller was born in Bridgewater, Va. In 1924, he entered the Dairy Department of V.P.I., where he was a member of the cadet band during his freshman and sophomore years. While in school, he was president of the Dairy Club. In 1928, he received his B.S. in Dairy Husbandry and went to work for Garst Bros. Dairy as head of laboratory and in charge of field work, where he remained until 1943. From 1943 to 1960, he was director of Public Relations for Garst Bros. and spent a considerable time in sales. Garst Bros. sold to Pet Milk Company in March, 1961, and Mr. Miller organized and put into effect a completely new quality control program as related to farm production and now this program is in effect throughout the State of Virginia. He had always been active in the industry as well as civic affairs of the community and state. He served as president of the Virginia Dairy Products Association in 1948-1949. He was a member of the Agriculture Committee of the Roanoke Chamber of Commerce and served as chairman in 1954. He was a charter member of the Optimist Club of Roanoke and served as president in 1944-45 and had a 25 year perfect attendance record. He had been a member of the Dairy Council since 1941 and served as president of the Dairy Council from 1950-1965. He was a charter member of the Dairy Fieldman's Association and was a member of the Windsor Hills Methodist Church. He was also a longtime member of Hidden Valley Country Club. Funeral services will be at Oakey's South Chapel, 11 a.m., Saturday, June 17, 1995 with Rev. D. Michael Meloy officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Burial Park. SULLIVAN, Marie M., 95, of Bridgeville, Penn., died Thursday morning, June 15, 1995 at Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Shawsville, Va. Though near the end, rarely herself, Marie held to her whit and humor. She is survived by her son, Henry J. Sullivan, Roanoke; her three grandchildren; and one great-grandson. We thank God for the girt of her and we celebrate her life with us.
