FUNDS CUT FOR ARMY MUSEUM

The House soundly defeated a move Friday to plug $14 million for an Army museum into a military construction bill.

In a bipartisan 261-137 vote, the House accepted an amendment to the appropriations measure striking the money for the museum, which the Army plans for a site in Arlington, Va., across the Potomac River from Washington.

The debate found opponents of the museum portraying it as wasteful pork masquerading as a vital national defense item. Supporters said the issue boiled down to honor, history and respect for the uniformed military.
