PRAISE FOR HOSPITAL

I was so pleased to hear of plans to construct a new building for Radford Community Hospital at the interchange of Interstate 81 and Virginia 177.

As chair of the Health and Safety Committee of the New Century Council, I know a state-of-the-art facility with patient-focused care will benefit the citizens of Radford and surrounding counties. The new facility plans to increase emphasis on wellness and prevention - the focus of the vision of the New Century Council for the New River Valley.

I commend Radford Community Hospital on this major undertaking, and I am proud of their commitment to delivering cost-effective, high quality health care for the citizens of New River Valley.

Format disgusting

I am certain that I am not alone in voicing my disgust over the format change at WVVV-FM (Rock 105). This is obviously a decision that was prescribed by the station's management, destined to occur no matter how much the public protested. I am not aware of one listener who felt that a change was necessary, and I know many, many Rock 105 patrons.

The market is flooded with mainstream stations. To me, Rock 105 was the only acceptable alternative. While all of the music played on Rock 105 did not suit my taste, there was a great deal of variety as well as promotions and contests. I have to wonder what will happen when Radford and Tech students return in the fall to hear the change in their beloved 105.

I know there are others in the New River Valley who feel the same as I do about this, and there are sure to be thousands more come fall. If the management cares what the public thinks, as they profess they do, they will drop this nonsense and give us back our rock station.

Sin of parking

I confess, I have committed a horrible sin. I violated the 11th Commandment: "Do not park in the church parking lot."

While visiting the [offices of the] Blacksburg Electronic Village for 15 minutes and not finding an empty parking meter after going around the block four times, I pulled into the church's parking lot though the signs clearly stated that it is reserved for church business. The name of the church will not be mentioned.

For this sin, the penalty is not six Hail Marys or 10 Our Fathers, but a tow to the other end of town by Tek-Tow.

It took me 40 minutes to walk to Yellow Sulphur Road where they are located, punishment enough, but they charged me $72 to give me back my car. Their normal towing charge is $35, the rest is storage for approximately one hour. They informed me that they magnanimously gave me a $15 discount for being so prompt. It would have been $87 otherwise.

This is an outrageous setup. I understand the church's position of not wanting their parking lot used, but this is usury, an even greater sin than parking.

Reunion success

The Jennelle reunion was a great success with over 100 people attending They came from 11 states, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Georgia, Florida, California, Arizona, Ohio, Maryland, West Virginia and Tennessee.

They gathered at the Jennelle Cemetery. The Harvey Black chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy conducted the memorial service for the Civil War soldiers. Wreaths, provided by Bobby Roberts of Angles Florist in Christiansburg, were placed on each of the soldiers' graves during the ceremony by their descendents. They were Roy, Ernest, Calvin, Leonard and John Jennelle.

Following the ceremony, the family gathered for a picnic at Blacksburg Town Park.

We would like to thank Robert Freis and Alan Kim for the article and pictures they provided for the Current section of the Roanoke Times & World-News on May 27. We would also like to thank all of those who [have] contributed time and funds to improve the family cemetery, all of those who attended and those who called and sent us copies of the article.
