NEW RIVER PEOPLE

William J. Dawson Jr. and Rozetta C. Reed were honored by New River Community Action May 18 at the organization's 30th Anniversary Celebration.

Reed received the Rev. George L. Ducker Memorial Scholarship Award. A former Head Start student, Reed recently graduated from Radford High School. She has been active in the local Big Brothers/Big Sisters program and the Girl Scouts.

Reed is also a recipient of the Gold Award, a senior Girl Scout's highest attainment. For her project, she designed an old African-American playground at Bissett Park to be a campsite for scouts and other youth groups, an effort that won praise from city officials.

At Radford she was a member of the symphonic and marching bands, where she played flute and was selected for All-County bands.

She plans to use the $300 scholarship to attend New River Community College and Radford University to pursue a career in music education. She is the daughter of Sarah E. Carter.

Dawson received the Phillip M. Sadler Community Services Award. A retired member of the New River Community College faculty, Dawson chairs the New RIver Community Action board.

He has played an influential role in a number of community organizations, including the Pulaski County Emergency Needs Task Force, New River Community Sentencing, the New River Valley Agency on Aging and the Pulaski County United Way.

He most recently helped form the Community Foundation, which supports local charities. Dawson also teaches Sunday School at First Presbyterian Church in Pulaski.

The awards were presented by New River Community Action for the first time and honor community spirited individuals who died within the past year: Ducker was a Presbyterian minister in Radford and Sadler was a Pulaski County lawyer. Both were involved with New River Community Action's programs.

The Montgomery 4-H Livestock Club has participated in various judging and stockmen competitions and exhibitions this spring. Among the events they participated included the Wytheville Bull Test Station Open House, Virginia Beef Expo, the Southwest and Central District 4-H Livestock Judging Contest and the Roanoke Area Junior Livestock Show.

The Montgomery junior 4-H team members: Travis Donaldson, Kelly McKinnon, Mary Wood, Brad Donaldson, Justin Whittier, Darren Eversole and Eric Eversole. Senior team members: Lori McKinnon and April Lester.

In June, members will participate at the State 4-H Livestock Judging Contest to be at Virginia Tech and the Southwest Virginia Junior Lamb show.

Darren Eversole and Eric Eversole will exhibit Angus cattle at the 1995 Eastern Regional Junior Angus Show in Timonium, Md. Both are junior members of the American Angus Association and will be among 196 young Angus breeders at the competition.

Several former employees of Leggett department store had a reunion luncheon at Stone's Cafeteria in Christiansburg. Candles were lit in memory of those who have passed away. Each guest recounted a memorable experience while working at the department store. Those attending were Costella Kipps, Ethel Kinzer, Thelma Charlton, Ruby Lee Carner, Evelyn Harris, Elsie Charlton, Pat Letto, Louise Akers, Sylvia Jones, Irene Vernon, Joan Rice, Madeline Woolwine, Mary Thornton, Emeline Agee, Lora Gunter, June Riggan, Richard Ballengee, Cavel Bishop, Lilian Crowe, Rebecca Gutshall. Alma Mannon and Vivian Warren hosted the event.

Ty Parr has been named the new case manager at Big Brothers/Big Sisters of New River Valley Inc. Parr recently graduated from Radford University with a degree in social work and served as service provider and residential support aid for the New River Valley Community Service Board.

Two Blacksburg residents received awards at the 16th Virginia Watercolor Society Jurored Exhibition. Z.L. Feng received Best in Show, Virginia Watercolor Society's Presidents' Award and Victoria Jordan Stone received the Depot Artist, Starving Artists Award.

The Virginia Watercolor Society is the only state-wide organization for Virginia artists. In addition to annual exhibitions, the non-profit organization supports educational programs.

A poem by Pauline Anderson of Radford was recently published in "Wildflower Expressions," a new volume of poetry by the National Council of State Garden Clubs. Anderson's poem is titled "Ode to Wildflowers." Anderson is a member of the Inglewood Garden Club.

Members of the Col. William Christian Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently had a luncheon at Shoney's and elected new officers. They are: Catherine McKenzie, regent; Juanita Correll, vice regent; Sue Vernon, secretary; Jack Lester, treasurer; Carol Reno, registrar; and Gwen Shelburn, historian.

Florence Allen of Christiansburg was the luncheon speaker. She talked about her experience as an 1st Lt. Army nurse in World War II.
