Fifty-two of the 186 cars derailed around 9:45 a.m. near Dinwiddie County, said Bob Auman, a Norfolk Southern spokesman. The cause of the derailment was not known.
Some cars fell on Squirrel Level Road, which was blocked early Saturday afternoon, said T. Abraham, a Petersburg police dispatcher.
The train was headed to Norfolk from Bluefield, W.Va., when it derailed, Auman said. It was going about 42 mph.
Norfolk Southern took over the cleanup around 2 p.m., Abraham said.
Auman said the cleanup should be completed by sunrise today. Crews brought in derricks, cranes, bulldozers and sidewinders from Richmond, Roanoke, Norfolk and other areas, he said.
